There's something about Grimes that's hard to pinpoint but impossible to ignore. Her songs range from heart-meltingly beautiful to borderline petrifying and while she represents everything it means to be young today, she also offers a wisdom beyond her years. She's an icon to many, a strong voice on important issues, and when we spoke to her late last year, on the verge of releasing Art Angels, the environment and women's rights were at the forefront of her thoughts.

Since then, Grimes has been travelling the world with her Acid Reign tour and is now back in Australia for the St. Jerome's Laneway Festival and a string of side shows. Fans, and fellow creative rebels, Romance Was Born's Luke Sales and Anna Plunkett sat down with her to discuss beliefs, video games, fashion and beyond.

What does 'Art Angels' mean to you?
I think I was just referring to the voices of inspiration or whatever, you know? It seems like something outside of your body, it seems sort of religious.

Are you a religious person? Do you believe in reincarnation?
No, not really. I kind of believe in everything and also nothing.

Do you believe in unicorns?
Unicorns? I think it's a possibility! (Laughs)

How do you feel about Disneyland and Disney in general?
I don't know, I feel like Disney has pretty good movies. I could see Disneyland potentially having like weird labour laws or something, but maybe they're good, I don't know. I've never been to Disneyland so I don't know.

You shot your Flesh Without Blood video at the Madonna Inn. We've had a long-term dream to shoot something there too. How did that come about?
I think my manager was just like, "look at this crazy place!" and I was like, "wait, this is an hour away from LA". And it was also really cheap to shoot for two days anywhere on the property.

What is your favourite emoji or favourite emoji combination?
I like the spaghetti, it's my favourite food.

What do you do on the plane?

What's your favourite game console?
The N64! It's a classic.

Do you like dogs?
I like all dogs equally but I want the really troll dogs, like wrinkly faced dogs.

Do you like troll dolls?
I'm not super familiar with troll dolls but they're very cool looking. Great hair.

Is it true that you scrapped a whole album's worth of work?
Um, kind of. There are literally thousands of songs on my hard drive that I've probably scrapped. So it's twenty albums I've scrapped by that standard.

Let's talk about fashion and your relationship with Chanel, they are so smart to endorse someone as imaginative and spirited as you. How do you find that personal balance when working with such a major label?
I feel like there's fashion and there's style and I've always been pretty down with making stuff and sometimes they can collide and that's really cool.

Did you meet Karl Lagerfeld?
Yeah, very briefly.

Are you into crystals? Do you carry one when you travel?
Not really. I mean people give me a lot of crystals over the course of the tour and I travel with them and then put them all in a box. A nice box. But I'm not super familiar with the world of crystals.

What did you think of Star Wars?
I fucking love Star Wars!
