Robert Mapplethorpe: the perfect medium, currently on show at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, includes over 200 works spanning the artist's career and communicates the story of his unique creative journey. This is the first major exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe's work to be shown in Australia in more than 20 years and understandably, we're excited.
To help celebrate, we've curated a special night of free music, ideas and conversation inspired by the legendary artist for Wednesday November 8th. We're opening an i-D lounge within the walls of the Gallery, and have invited friends, musicians, artists, photographers and performers to play and speak as we explore the profound legacy of Robert Mapplethorpe.
Kicking off at 5.30PM, coordinating curator of the exhibition, Isobel Parker Philip, will give a special talk exploring Mapplethorpe's unique artistic vision and historical significance, providing the perfect platform from which to view the work.*
At 7PM, Melbourne DJ and producer Laila Sakini will play a set devoted to the sounds of Mapplethorpe's era. A little later in the night, we'll also be treated to a brand new live performance by Gussy, with songs that dig deep and break your heart.
We'll also host a discussion on Mapplethorpe's influence as an artist who creatively and politically paved the way for so many voices today. On the panel, which will begin around 7PM, are a number of Australia's interesting minds and provocateurs: creative director and fashion editor Kurt Johnson, professional dominatrix Mistress Tokyo, interdisciplinary artist and performer Bhenji Ra and fashion photographer Rene Vaile. Come along and share your own ideas about the enduring significance of Mapplethorpe's work.
Enter the exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe: the perfect medium and i-D's vortex of ideas and entertainment as part of Art After Hours on November 8th from 5PM. Full details here. We look forward to seeing you there.
* The curator talk takes place inside the exhibition so you'll need to buy an exhibition ticket. The rest of the program is free of charge.
