Happy Slowthai album release day! With features from Skepta, A$AP Rocky, Dominic Fike, Denzel Curry, Deb Never, James Blake and Mount Kimbie, the Northampton musician’s second album has a lot going for it. Following up 2019’s Nothing Great About Britain, the 14-tracker is split into two sides that span two very different moods, across which the artist attempts to communicate the extent of his complex self. After having to rebuild his reputation following his behaviour at the NME Awards exactly one year ago today, Slowthai takes on cancel culture, loneliness, self-acceptance and more. We’ve selected album closer “adhd” as this week’s playlist opener.
Also out today is Lauren Auder’s beautiful 5 Songs For The Dysphoric EP, which sees the French artist collaborate with Danny L Harle, Clams Casino and Celeste. It’s the first project that Lauren says she felt comfortable enough to let in some of her exterior influences, noting that, “I think the reason the past two EPs were made in such an insular way was that I needed to discover myself and get to the point where I felt confident in my artistic voice”. The result? Something even more explorative but no less her. You’ll find “Small Ghosts” in the playlist today, alongside “Bridge” by Seoul-born, Tokyo-based artist YonYon and “FEED HER” from JPEGMAFIA’s very good EP2!
Fans of fun will already be well aware of Danny L Harle’s forthcoming gabber album-turned-virtual clubland by now. This week he shared two tracks from it: “Oceans Theme”, a collaboration with DJ Ocean, who sounds deliciously and suspiciously like Caroline Polachek; and “Interlocked” with DJ Mayhem, who if Spotify credits are to be relied upon, may well be Hudson Mohawke. Drink that in and stay tuned for more beautiful madness, basically.
