Titled Northern Surf and with a cassette tape of the soundtrack on each seat, Topman went retro this season, harking back to the days of 70s Northern Soul - a subculture birthed by the disenchanted working class in Northern England who liked 60s American soul and danced until the sun came up - Billy Idol, and 90s Cali surf culture.

Reviving many of the Northern Soul trends, silhouettes came skin-tight on top with super wide chinos and slogans printed across pastel vests and long sleeves tops that read "Soulnites", "Danz like you're Northern" and "Disco Sucks". Gordon Richardson and the Topman design team also included a vast array of badges, zip up polo necks, washed silk suits in ice cream colours and flowing poncho type capes.

We don't know how long it will take for the wider trouser to catch on for guys, but the hedonistic party spirit of Northern Soul is still going strong today.
