olivia rose's year in photos
The most exciting photographers of 2016 share glimpses of their year in images.
Olivia Rose — i-D's much-loved contributor and photography's rising star — is a busy girl. In addition to photographing the industry's hottest musicians and grime's biggest talent, the 29-year-old North Londoner spent the year working on This Is Grime with i-D's Features Director Hattie Collins. The duo documented the grime scene's emergence from the underground to its position as one of the UK's most important musical subcultures. Capturing everyone from Stormzy, Giggs, and Lady Leshurr, to D Double E, JME, Skepta, and beyond, the book tells the history of grime since its inception in 2002; it's an oral history of the subculture from the people at its very core. From shooting backstage at Skepta's homecoming gig at Ally Pally, to being a fly on the wall at Dizzee's Boy In Da Corner show at the Red Bull Music Academy in Williamsburg, this is Olivia's year in photos…
"It took me six years to get Christie (my likkle brother from another mother and an astonishingly talented vocalist) to stay still long enough for a portrait. I caught him in Lewisham at the start of the year."
"By February, Hattie Collins [i-D Features Director] and I were already knees deep in shooting for This Is Grime. When I saw this frame on the contact sheet I got shivers; Ghetts in a corner shop in E13."
"Loving the contradiction of North London's finest, Terry Dixon aka 'Snatch Money Bags' wearing Italy's finest, Fendi."
"This is an outtake from a shoot for McQ eyewear. Jordan was so extreme, chain-smoking roll ups in between serenading us with his saxophone — I live for these kinds of people."
"Obscured by smoke from my own cigarette — outside Dizzee Rascal's Boy In Da Corner gig in Brooklyn, NYC."
"TJ from Leni's models shot with me for an ongoing project with Strut Archives that I was weaving in and out of during this year. The image is the creepiest (and best) from that series."
"July was the month that Stranger Things came into our lives. And cos I'm a boss, I had already shot one of the cast members — Charlie Heaton — a year or so back in Leeds on the set of Urban and the Shed Crew. This is that pic."
"This year I decided roam solo at Notting Hill Carnival and got some of the best pictures I've ever shot there. Published in BOYS magazine, these guys didn't want their picture taken, but secretly, they did."
"AfroPunk London 2016 — a close close up of TheOGM of the Ho99o9s. I love it when someone unexpectedly wants to work it in front of the camera."
"In October, I curated the An Eye on Grime exhibition in Leeds with Hattie Collins for Red Bull Music Academy. Here's my shot of Kano hanging in the exhibition space."
"Scarlet catches his son Ni at the wheel of the car in Bermuda."
