rihanna in comic battle over her real name
DC Comics think she might be mistaken for a Batman sidekick if she trademarks her name.
i-D cover star Rihanna is having a little difficulty with her illustrated almost-namesake. DC Comics are trying to block the Bajan songstress from copyrighting her real name, Robyn, as they claim, "Consumers are likely to be deceived," because the name is "virtually identical" to that of Batman's sidekick, Robin, who has been around since the 1940s.
Rihanna had wanted to launch an online magazine called Robyn, but the caped Robin already owns trademarks from 1990 for a comic book, as well as an action figure from 1984. DC Comics have said Rihanna's proposed publication, "is likely to cause confusion, cause mistake, or to deceive the public". Imagine how disappointed Rihanna's fans would be to discover, not the megawatt pop princess, but two men in leggings shouting about crime on their laptop screens?
