It shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that Marcus Whale played saxophone as a kid. The Inland Sea musician and member of Black Vanilla, Collarbones, Scissor Lock and Tennis Boys has clearly always been cool. Looking back at his brief brass-stage he remembers, "playing the saxophone really happens in the diaphragm, or even lower, at the pelvic floor, which empowers all that idle air hanging out in your lungs. I think what appealed to me was how playing a wind instrument sonifies your guts." Hearing his muscles wrestling air through an instrument appealed to him, long after he put down the sax.

With his new mix for i-D he melds his past and present self, blending a tenor sax quartet with dance tunes. Not that it's all serious, "Look out for the hilarious mashup I made of a Friendships track and 2003 chart dance hit Just Won't Do".
