jamie foxx accused of transphobia over bruce jenner jokes
The comedian’s comments at last night’s iHeartRadio show caused offence in the LGBT community.
Last night's iHeartRadio Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in LA were supposed to be a fun pop affair, with Rihanna doing her debut performance of Bitch Better Have My Money and Madonna teaming up with Taylor Swift, but host Jamie Foxx's insensitive jokes at Bruce Jenner's expense caused outrage in the LGBT community and beyond. The actor, singer and comedian poked fun at Jenner's reported transition to a woman, telling the crowd (including Bruce's teenage daughter Kylie), "We've got some ground-breaking performances here, too, tonight. Bruce Jenner will be here doing some musical performances - he's doing a his-and-her duet all by himself" before finishing with, "Look, I'm just busting your balls while I still can."
Perez Hilton was the most famous public figure to speak out, saying on Twitter, "Boo! Shame on you #iHeartAwards for allowing @iamjamiefoxx to be transphobic on national television! Those #BruceJenner jokes were wrong!!!" but other viewers chipped in about the "grossly transphobic" and "terrible, disgusting joke." One summed things up well, saying, "Be funny, but not at the expense of others."
He's not the only award ceremony host to get it wrong recently: The New Yorker dubbed Seth Macfarlane's hosting of the 2013 Oscars a "hostile, ugly, sexist night" and Tina Fey, Amy Poehler and Margaret Cho's Golden Globe jokes about North Korea were considered to be racist by many.
