The BBC has announced new plans to give UK artists more of a priority on Radio 1 and 2, with an aim to boost homegrown talent. A recent review carried out by the BBC stated that they want to "ensure that Radio 1 and Radio 2 have a strong commitment to new and UK music so that a strong proportion of the new music in daytime on Radio 1 and Radio 2 should be from the UK".

The review stemmed from claims that the radio content aired is not distinctive enough. Although almost 90% of songs played on Radios 1 and 2 were not played by any other station, currently Radio 1's 'A playlist', which shows the songs played most often in daytime hours, features nine international acts compared to only six from the UK.

The details of how much new UK music will be played on the two stations has not yet been decided, however it is to be discussed with the BBC regulator in the near future.
