rihanna becomes the first woman to win shoe of the year award
Her almost-always-sold-out Fenty X Puma Creeper claimed the prize.
Rihanna's Fenty X Puma creeper has been crowned the Shoe of the Year — and rightly so. The award comes from Footwear News; the outlet honored the singer-cum-designer at its 30th annual Achievement Awards. In claiming the prize Rihanna dethroned Kanye West, who was honored in 2015 (for the Yeezy Boost 350, of course). The year prior, tennis legend Stan Smith was celebrated for his eponymous Adidas collaboration. Riri is the first female designer to win the award, which makes her victory all the sweeter.
"Never could I have imagined the amount of support and love we got from around the world for #THECREEPER," Rihanna wrote on Instagram in celebration. "Thank you to everyone who represented and made the movement!!! One Love."
The hard-to-find Creeper was sold out for much of the year. In fact, when the shoe first launched last spring, it sold out in just three hours. The sneaker was one of the very first offerings from Ri's joint venture with Puma, which has since birthed two celebrated apparel collections. The latest saw Riri reimagine sportswear for Marie Antoinette and the ladies of Versailles. If you're keen to get your hand on the Creeper, we've got bad news. It's sold out right now — as you might've already guessed.
