socks with sandals are officially a thing at milan fashion week

Thanks to Bottega Veneta, Versace and Marni, dad’s wardrobe staple is emerging as one of the season’s biggest menswear trends.

Since the dawn of time, unfashionable dads have embarrassed their vacationing offspring with an unabashed commitment to Tevas and tube socks. Although Opening Ceremony has spent the last year making the strappy staples cool again, this past weekend's Bottega Veneta, Versace, and Marni shows in Milan officially marked the trend's transition into a verified fashion thing.

"Socks and sandals, once voted worst fashion faux pas, reign supreme in Milan as the footwear of choice for Spring 2016," Tim Blanks observed at Bottega Veneta. Tomas Maier's spiritually-minded spring collection served up crinkly silk cotton pants paired with slouchy, Earth-toned socks and leather sandals (if this description conjures the specter of Wellesley-era Hillary Clinton, you're right on the money.)

Elsewhere, Marni came with a thick ribbed camping sock and more geometric take on footwear detailing. The sandals' bold triangular shapes paired nicely with the collection's sharp and oversized collars. And Donatella even put her own twist on the shoobie for a few looks, too. The Versace matriarch paired pastel socks with strappier sandals for some Purple Rain meets Lawrence of Arabia vibes.

But as Milan draws to a close, will Parisian menswear designers keep up the touristy trend? There is proof that Paris' princes of darkness Hedi Slimane and Rick Owens have in fact been to  the beach, so really anything is possible.
