mastered and i-D find the future of make-up

i-D teamed up with online fashion school Mastered for a brief highlighting minimal make-up with maximum effect.

When make-up artist Val Garland does something, the world takes notice. This is the lady who painted the perfect faces of Lara Stone and Kate Moss for the latest Balenciaga campaign and worked with the late, great Alexander McQueen up until his tragic deathso earlier this year when she announced she'd be working with online fashion school Mastered on a 3 month make-up course for burgeoning talent, we just knew we had to be involved.

We set students a brief exploring 'Youth Now', something that runs through i-D's DNA, and asked the students to imagine an on-set editorial situation with photographer Dan Jackson and i-D's Fashion Director Alastair McKimm and we were floored with the results! Shortlisted to a talented 40, (that can be seen here), our final four winners, Alena Moiseeva, Isabella Schimid, Isobel Claire and Mariska Virginia van Kasbergen, shot with their own teams and created images that would look right at home in the pages of i-D. So learn remember their names kids, as these talents stood head and shoulders above the rest and it'll be these masters of maquillage up there with Val, creating the looks on iconic editorials, campaigns and shows some day soon!

      Isobel Claire

      Where do you live?
      Sydney, Australia

What inspired your final make-up look?
I wanted to portray a particular kind of youth; those who wear their heart on their sleeve, a youth that aren't afraid to look different, be different, and stand out from the crowd - the punk subculture is bold and supports the promotion of individual freedom.

      What is 'beautiful' to you?
      Perfect imperfections.

What would you most like to see change about the beauty industry?
I would like to see more love and support between artists.

Whose make-up would you most like to do?
      Kate Moss. Yes please!

      Isabella Schimid

What inspired your final make-up look?
The model Fernanda Ly and the pastel hair colour phenomenon symbolises something of great value to me, an optimistic future. I need to credit everyone who helped me as it was definitely the team effort that helped me achieve my final look.

      What is 'beautiful' to you?
Anything that exudes confidence is beautiful.

What would you most like to see change about the beauty industry?
When fake ceases to be celebrated.

Whose make-up would you most like to do?
      Lara Stone, Kate Moss, Madonna

      Alena Moiseeva

      Where do you live?
      Moscow, Russia

What inspired your final make-up look?
A few things, I guess - the model's face, her outfit, the Mastered course and the brief itself and i-D's style and vibe. I took the magazine as a guide from the beginning of my make-up journey, even though it's never been sold in my country. I couldn't have done it without the whole team though.

      What is 'beautiful' to you?
Something that can go through the years and decades. Something that is clear for everyone and doesn't need explanation.

What would you most like to see change about the beauty industry?
I want the industry to expand not only in fashion capitals but in every piece of the world.

Whose make-up would you most like to do?
I think it is Christy Turlington. Her beauty and what's behind it inspires me now as much as 20 years ago! She is my role model as a woman, a person and a professional. I've sadly never met her in a real life though!

      Mariska Virginia van Kasbergen

      Where do you live?
      Hilversum, 20 min from Amsterdam.

What inspired your final make-up look?
During my research about i-D, Alastair Mckimm and Daniel Jackson, I totally visualised myself during the shoot to be with them. I really took their visions, their ideas and the brief with me and lived and breathed i-D. I also researched some trends from the shows but I knew I wanted to create something more unique.

      What is 'beautiful' to you?
Love, character, passion and freedom. You can be passionate about a lot of things in life and you can find love everywhere; in every shape. Being free and passionate in life means a lot! Being passionate about my job as a make-up artist really feeds and completes my soul.

What would you most like to see change about the beauty industry?
Never try to be to perfect to fit in, because it will not work. Find your own strong identity-then you are already a winner!

Whose make-up would you most like to do?
Lara Stone, Daphne Groeneveld, Alek Wek, Cindy Crawford, Rihanna and Gisele Bundchen.
