We spoke to club kids around the country about why partying is so important in many queer lives, and how we can work together to make it better.
What do you do?
I study, work, sleep, and hang out with the girls whenever I can.
What does the "perfect night out" look like for you?
Spending hours getting the right look together, another 15 minutes for make up that stunts and heaps of moscato.
Why is the club such an important haven for gender diverse and queer kids?
It's a place where queer people can be free to express themselves and experiment with their identity to find their true selves. There is something about being in the club for those hours and not having the outside world exist, where you're free to express whatever you want without the judgement of society.
How do lock out laws, clubbing restrictions, and police presence tarnish the connection and acceptance found in after-dark communities?
These have all definitely been restrictive towards queer culture, tarnishing the ability for us to express ourselves in a place where we thought we were safe to be anything we wanted. It has us on constant edge that any second we could be thrown backlash, making it uncomfortable for most of us to express ourselves.
