sorry drake, charli xcx dropped two proper bops and a video last night
Plus! The best of new music Friday in one scorchio i-D playlist.
"IF U HAVEN’T WATCHED THE 5 IN THE MORNING VIDEO YET WTF ARE U EVEN DOING?!” Charli tweeted yesterday. If you still haven’t watched it today as you’re reading this then I repeat: wtf are you even doing? Let’s proceed by first watching her slay in what looks suspiciously like an empty strobe-filled Printworks, and then getting started on our BEST NEW MUSIC playlist which opens with Focus, one of the poptastic tunes Charli gifted us while we slept. “Imagine if i just dropped focus/no angel tomorrow…(sic)” she teased fans with yesterday. As if by magic, Focus -- which features the killer line “make it pop, Coca Cola. Keep it hot, Barcelona” -- appeared online this morning complete with its No Angel b-side.
I know, I know… you all bore witness to HMLTD’s Proxy Love wedding yesterday. The ceremony made for a beautiful video and the caffeined-up song makes for a banging second track on today’s playlist. Next up, Drake has been busy (hiding his son, jk) and today shared his long-awaited double album Scorpion. That’s 25 whole tracks across which you can hear: Mariah Carey vocals, a posthumous Michael Jackson feature (on the playlist), and samples from both Nicki Minaj's Boss Ass Bitch and Donald Glover's series Atlanta. Read all about it here.
Remember The Blaze? The French cousins who made the amazing music videos for Virile, Territory and Heaven? They’re back with an album announcement (DANCEHALL, out 7 September) and a banging new track called She. Your best American girl Mitski’s back too, with the lovely but sad Nobody, which is about how she just wants one good movie kiss and that she’s fully aware that nobody will save her. I’m pretty confident that she’s going to save herself, tbh.
Florence Welch’s High As Hope is out today and one of the songs is a beautiful tribute to Patti Smith. It was written, according to a radio interview Flo did with SiriusXM, when she was trying to figure out how to live a stable creative life and reading a lot of Patti Smith’s work. It seems she hasn’t met her punk hero yet and is kinda concerned that, “I wrote this song… she’s going to think I’m crazy!” If you, too, are a fan of Just Kids and M Train, this'll be right up your W 23rd street.
There’s also a new EP from Japanese band Wednesday Campanella called Galapagos. The highlight is Minakata Kumagusu, a revered author, biologist, naturalist and brilliant thinker who protected sacred forests and realised the ultimate potential of the Japanese mind. Why would you not name your new single after him?
Elsewhere, there’s new stuff by MF DOOM, Kamasi Washington (like he didn’t just release an album last week), Let’s Eat Grandma (going all Björk on us), Avelino x Not3s, 88rising x NIKI, syd B, Oscar, LAUREL, Popcaan, Iglooghost and way more. Happy new music Friday! Happy weekend!
