miley cyrus claims nicki minaj wasn't 'polite' during taylor vmas spat
"What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind," says the singer.
With this year's VMAs now just days away, host Miley Cyrus has waded in to the Taylor v Nicki controversy that's dominated the build-up to MTV's annual awards bash. Although Miley told The New York Times that "she didn't really get into" the beef as it was happening, that hasn't stopped her from criticising Nicki for the way in which she made her point about the lack of diversity in this year's nominations.
"What I read sounded very Nicki Minaj, which, if you know Nicki Minaj is not too kind. It's not very polite," Miley said. "I think there's a way you speak to people with openness and love. You don't have to start this pop star against pop star war. It became Nicki Minaj and Taylor in a fight, so now the story isn't even on what you wanted it to be about. Now you've just given E! News 'Catfight! Taylor and Nicki Go at It'."
Insisting that she totally grasped the point Nicki was trying to make when she tweeted "if your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for vid of the year", Miley added: "I know you can make it seem like, oh I just don't understand because I'm a white pop star. [But] I know the statistics. I know what's going on in the world. But to be honest, I don't think MTV did that on purpose."
Since Miley made her comments, it's been announced that the VMAs' show-opening performance will come from... Nicki Minaj. The event takes place this Sunday at LA's Microsoft Theater and Miley has teased that her aim as host is to "create my Instagram - which people love to think is so freaky - in real life."
