For Korean-born, Belgium-raised jewellery designer Kimy Gringoire, design is all about duality. It speaks volumes, really, not only of her multi-national upbringing, but of the country she eventually settled in too: on the one hand a nation renowned for its beer, chocolate and moules-frites, and on the other, the Antwerp Six, Raf Simons and a hotbed of searingly radical, avant-garde design. You can follow the thread to Kimy's work, released under her Korean name Kim Mee Hye and marked by a kind of hidden luxury; simple pieces that, on closer inspection, are anything but. Now based in London, she came by the i-D office to talk us through the carefully-constructed messages and mechanisms behind her Antwerp-made earrings, bracelets and rings. Here are ten things you need to know…

1. She never wore jewellery before making it herself…
I never had jewellery. But I met someone who designed it and became interested. I thought, maybe I can make something that is my idea of what I'd like to wear. My Cartier!

2. And although she had a brief spell studying how to do it…
After that I was, like, okay, this is not for me, but now I know what to do, I'm going to make the designs myself.

3. She enjoys being based in London…
I love being here. It's less constrictive and I like that.

4. But if there's one thing she misses about her fatherland, it would be…
The weather!

5. She's counts J.W. Anderson as one of her favourite designers…
And I love Raf Simons. I love the Belgian ones.

6. All in all though…
I'm not inspired by someone specifically… I just love when people are strong, and brave enough to make things.

7. She counts freedom as her greatest luxury…
To be free with something. I think that is luxury. That you can do whatever you want without any code or obligation to any rules.

8. So much so, she made a book on it called In memory of things to come
It's about moments of life, where to live… And the jewellery can be part of it.

9.In terms of who she'd like to wear her jewellery…
I have a friend. I really like her. She's so cool. She's not famous. Just a normal girl, cool, nice.

10. And she has wise words for people who want to design themselves…
Don't just study jewellery. Go to see architecture and other things to build your design. If you just stare at the same things you're not going to change something. What is cool is when you do something that is new. That makes you feel happy.
