Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith each won a pair of Brits last night, and Taylor Swift, Pharrell Williams and One Direction all came away with one of the Tracey Emin-designed trophies, but this morning no one is talking about the actual awards. Instead, the Brits 2015 are destined to be remembered as The One Where Madonna Fell Over.

The singer was performing at the Brit Awards for the first time in 20 years, closing the show with her new single Living for Love, when a wardrobe malfunction of epic proportions occurred. As she mounted steps to the top of the stage, she appeared to be struggling to untie her cape at her neck, so when a backing dancer attempted to yank it off as planned, he inadvertently pulled the singer to the floor. Inside The O2 Arena, there was an audible gasp as Madonna, the long-reigning Queen of Pop, momentarily lay flat on her back.

But because she's Madonna, the singer quickly rose to her feet and proceeded to complete the performance with a pained but defiant smile. Posting on Instagram afterwards, the singer told fans exactly what had gone wrong. "Armani hooked me up! My beautiful cape was tied too tight!" she wrote. "But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up! Thanks for your good wishes! I'm fine!" Madonna can take solace this morning in the fact that Living for Love is currently sitting at number two on the UK iTunes chart - her best placing in years.

Elsewhere, Kim Kardashian West introduced a performance from her husband, Kanye West, that proved too hot for ITV to handle. As the rapper officially debuted All Day, a cut lifted from his next album, ITV took objection to the track's generous selection of curse words and did the unthinkable: muting Kanye West.
