who’s up for an award this australian fashion festival season?

And are these competitions really a true indicator of who’s got it?

As information about the programming, special guests and various awards associated with VAMFF and MBFW trickle in, the divide between those invested and those ambivalent becomes evident. There are some exciting additions to the Melbourne schedule this year with Tome and Yasmin Sewell heading home for shows, Andreja Pejic walking for Josh Goot, Preen's Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi speaking at the Business Seminar and the announcement that Romance Was Born will close the festival at the National Gallery. This is great news for an event with a consumer-driven focus and makes up somewhat for the inconvenient Docklands location of the majority of the action.

In regards to the competitions, there's the Tiffany & Co. Designer Award as part of Melbourne's Fashion Festival, which is in its second decade and has an interesting selection including Verner, Bul, Pageant, Emma Mulholland and MacGraw battling it out for first. There's a significant monetary prize and if the attention rained on last year's winners, STRATEAS.CARLUCCI, is any indication, this award will be highly coveted.

The Australian Fashion Laureate, considered by some as the country's most prestigious fashion award, is an initiative of IMG and the NSW Government. The Laureate Award is reserved for the veterans and this year's finalists include ex-Vogue Australia editor Nancy Pilcher and TAFE Fashion Design Studio head Nicholas Huxley with his seventh consecutive nomination. The awards are then divided into sub-categories with a winner announced for each.

By their very nature awards shows are very subjective things and it's inevitable that not everyone will agree but let's hope the best and most honest talent wins in each case. The full list of nominees is below:
