"We were really inspired by the idea of migrating birds," said a newly blonde Kate Mulleavy backstage today at Rodarte. Any birds in particular? "It's more of an emotional thing. We just want to capture the feeling." That feeling was one of freedom and rather sexy peacocking. Glitter, lace, and feathers (occasionally all three) embellished the intricately detailed pieces, from flirty mini-dresses to cutaway pants.

Some bird stuff made its way into the collection quite literally, with marabou and ostrich feathers edging standout statement coats and the finale evening gowns. Glittered miniskirts featured feather-like patterns, too. The feathers were worked in organically, explained Kate: "We think something looks good, and then we test it. It's a free process. It's fun because it keeps you thinking about each piece until the very end."

Picking up on the previous collection's slightly sixties, high-waisted jeans vibe (Twitter has been aflutter about the skinnies), Kate and Laura are exploring a unique shape in fashion right now. The focus is on the waist, with blouses tucked into slim pants and cinched tight with belts. Think Debbie Harry backstage at the Mudd Club, that period when women's hips were 25 inches around.

Leather shorts and extreme glittered skirts and dresses definitely evoked the rock and roll universe, with more than a bit of Bowie in the mix. One could absolutely picture some of these pieces going straight onstage. When asked which musician she'd most like to dress in this collection, Kate answers, "Kim Gordon. She always surprises me, she can wear anything." It's fun picturing this super-feminine collection on Ms. Gordon, our generation's ultimate rocker in a dress.
