With the huge explosion of internet radio, there’s never been a better time to tune in. But when there’s so much choice, you might struggle to pick a good’un. Not to worry though. Apple Music’s latest Beats 1 show is going to be your new favourite, we just know it.
Airing today at 3pm UK time, PROUD is a celebration of the greatest and most progressive LGBT+ talent from across music and modern culture. Hosted by renowned journalist, grime connoisseur, author and i-D alumnus Hattie Collins, each episode features a guest from LGBTQ modern culture, be they musicians, actors, authors, activists or community leaders. The show features -- along with many bops -- candid discussions about LGBT+ culture and each of the guest’s individual journeys through life.
Today’s show kicks off with an appearance from King Princess, who chats with Hattie about how drag culture inspired her new single Cheap Queen, Lady Gaga, how she came out and embraced her queer identity, and how queer people can act as artists and activists in our current turbulent political times. “I feel like, like most queer people, especially in 2019, it can be daunting to figure out how you identify,” King Princess says. “And I think that the solution I found in my life is that, I feel like I identify at the intersection of two different identities. I identify as a gay woman – I love being part of the gay female community, and I think I relate most to our history. But at the same time, there's a part of me that is a genderqueer person and exists very much in the middle of two genders. I also find myself to be a gay man sometimes.”
The discussion will be punctuated by a stellar soundtrack, featuring Prince’s I Would Die for You, Lady Gaga’s Born this Way, George Michael’s Freedom 90 and tracks from Queen, Kim Petras and (obv) King Princess herself. What more could you possibly want, eh?
