my crew: felicity downie’s friends are deep, meaningful, dancing dreamers
Meet photographer Felicity Downie’s favourite people in this series which sees photographers shoot their muses and mates.
Name: Maile Shanti
Profession: I'm the founder and editor-in-chief of Accidental Discharge, occasional clothes hanger, and writer.
How do you know Felicity? We met on the wonderful world that is Instagram. She wanted to photograph me, we met up through a mutual friend who we had both dated whilst I was in Melbourne. We ended up getting dinner and chatting all night, we were joined at the hip after that day.
How would you describe your relationship? Creative, joyful, passionate—we bounce ideas off each other and talk late into the night. We're always talking about saving the world, it's how we became so close. She loses her phone a lot too, I am always finding it.
What do you call each other? I call her Didi (older sister), Flic, Fig, Bro. She calls me Mai and Didi, because I look like the older sister.
What does friendship mean to you? Total support and honesty, being able to bounce good energy of one another and make each other feel something special. I always know true, good friendship because after seeing that person I feel like I am my best self. And being able to communicate fully through GIFS.
Who would you like to be friends with? Audrey Hepburn has had my heart from the moment I can remember existing. I'd love to see that smile in real life.
What do you and your friends do together? Cook, dance, make G&Ts, laze at the beach, watch Sex and The City, and eat take-out Indian—we eat a lot. We're always creating new, sometimes weird, vegan dishes.
Name: Gemma Mahoney
Profession: Graphic designer and creative director of Accidental Discharge.
How do you know Felicity? I always knew of her, but we met in person because I was making a magazine with her friend Maile.
How would you describe your relationship? We're very close and comfortable. Recently Felicity lived in my room for a month and we became very dependent on each other, it sort of felt like we were dating. We spend a lot of time together and always try and go out and be spontaneous and have fun. We also never stop talking.
What do you call each other? Just Flick, she only calls me Gemma or maybe Gem Gem.
What does friendship mean to you? Finding and keeping a true friend is so special. I've been lucky the last couple of years to click with people and create strong, genuine, and true friendships. It really brings so much happiness and good times.
Who would you like to be friends with? I would have to say my once best friend. We've drifted apart and it just doesn't feel the same. I would wish for it to feel as good as it use to.
What do you and your friends do together? Everything. I have a solid friendship group that all live together. We love to hang and do nothing, but also party hard.
Name: Ruby-Rose Doneo
Profession: I aim to do what makes my heart glad! But for money I work at a bead shop and the rest of the time I'm a visual art student.
How do you know Felicity? I met Flic when I gatecrashed a date between her and my ex partner. We ended up ditching him and becoming tremendously good friends.
How would you describe your relationship? We're both very talkative. Sometimes we check the time and an hour or two has gone by whilst we were totally engrossed in the convo. We both have a lot to say but are equally interested in hearing each other.
What do you call each other? Mum and Mum.
What does your friendship mean to you? A LOT! I love Flic. I always leave our hang outs feeling a little bit more connected, understood, inspired, motivated, and silly!
Who would you like to be friends with? Jasper. My sister, mum, partner, and canine bestie all rolled into one. Some people don't get that she's a dog when I talk about her. But yeah, the amount of joy and fulfillment we get from each other is unsurpassable. And Kathleen Hanna!
What do you and your friends do together? Talk about vaginas, go to the dog beach, craft, dance, get STD checks, drink tea, facilitate random interactions with strangers. And we hug a lot. Physical friend intimacy is important, yo!
Name: Rosie Clynes
Profession: I just graduated from the VCA studying Theatre Practice/Performance, so I suppose I'm not a student anymore, but a theatre-maker and performer! That feels weird to say.
How do you know Felicity? She's my housemate. We share a balcony. And excellent vibes.
How would you describe your relationship? Felicity and I are very new friends, but it feels like we've known each other for ages. We both knew of each other long before we met, because of the outrageous number of mutual friends we have. I met her the evening she moved in, she cooked me dinner and we drank beers in our backyard and we just talked for three straight hours. She is such a warm and beautiful human being and we kind of just clicked immediately. I like meeting new friends like that. It's like both your souls are just like, "hey, this is cool and makes heaps of sense."
What do you call each other? I call her Flick, she just calls me Rosie. Simple, simple.
What does friendship mean to you? It means finding another human who you aren't afraid to be an absolute weirdo party idiot with. Who you can get unashamedly real and deep with at the drop of a pin—where D&Ms intersect with dancing like total losers together.
Who would you like to be friends with? Myself! I think being friends with yourself is the most important thing a human can do in their life. I want to keep friend-crushing on myself, taking myself to the movies, to galleries, on cute lil laksa dates, just hanging. If you're mates with yourself, you'll never feel lonely.
What do you and your friends do together? Hijack aux-cords at parties, talk about how much we love disco, dance to disco, cry at the movies, eat ramen, make each other clothes and food and cards and drawings, drink champagne, get topless at parties, road-trip, argue, kiss, hug, be wild, be sedate.
Name: Mitchell MacKintosh
Profession: Musician and chef, desperate to find a better way to make money.
How do you know Felicity? My girlfriend was always raving about this bubbly ray of sunshine in drizzly Melbourne who took stunning photos. Months later she kindly let us crash on her couch for a bit, then insisted we slept in her bed while she slept on the floor. Turns out this is classic Flic, always putting others first, always looking out for the little gal.
How would you describe your relationship? We eat a lot of meals together, like an inordinate amount of meals. I find myself cooking for Flic most nights when we're in the same town, which is a pleasure as she happily gobbles up anything I manage to throw together. A classic night with Flic usually ends in something getting knocked over.
What do you call each other? Flic mostly, although we seem to say "G'day Mate!" a lot, whenever something gets knocked over its, "Duuuuuuuude…"
What does friendship mean to you? Friendship is putting up with me never keeping in touch, talking shit for hours and hours, arguing passionately, eating together, driving my sorry arse around. It's listening to each other's fears, triumphs, insecurities, and dreams.
Who would you like to be friends with? Probably John Lennon, I remember being really upset when, as a kid, I found out he'd been killed years before. Or David Bowie, he's the guy I go to when I'm creatively stuck. I wish we could have sat around talking, arguing, and meshing heads.
What do you and your friends do together? Cook, eat, drink, create music, and talk for hours and hours and hours.
Name: Daisy Maya Lily Belle Bygott Dwyer

How do you know Felicity? I met felicity on Chapel Street in Melbourne and from that point on ensued our long distance communication, dabbling in the art of friendship.
How would you describe your relationship? We talk boys, conspiracies, hummus, and enjoy long walks along the beach at sunset. She's like a traveling witchy poo mummah who turns up out of nowhere to grace you in your life somehow.
What do you call each other? Fel-ick-ity, or Flic.
What does friendship mean to you? A nice time.
Who would you like to be friends with? Probably my garden.
