Cate Blanchett's this week revealed that she's had real life intimacies with women 'many times'. Now you can watch the actress's latest on screen character romance a younger woman, in the first clips from her new film Carol. The revelation about previous lesbian romances came this week in one of Blanchett's first interviews for Carol, the Todd Haynes directed, 50s set melodrama which premieres in competition at Cannes this weekend.

The film sees Blanchett play the alluring older woman to Rooney Mara's young department store girl. Blanchett plays the Carol of the title, an unhappily married, wealthy woman who begins a secret romance with Mara's character, Therese. The first clips include a daring flirtation over dinner scene, are marked by Haynes' luxurious attention to period detail as seen in his previously acclaimed Far From Heaven, which was set in the same era. A second teaser shows Therese photographing Carol at a distance on a shopping trip, though the older woman is not wholly unaware of her female fan. The two begin a lesbian affair which soon threatens Carol's family life and custody of her daughter, as her husband [played by Kyle Chandler] learns of the relationship with Therese and a previous dalliance with her best friend Abby [played by Sarah Paulson]. The film, an adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith novel, will go on general release later this year.
