The 22nd of April this year will mark 25 years since of the murder of Stephen Lawrence, who was killed in an unprovoked racially motivated attack aged just 18. To mark the anniversary, Stormzy is among several musicians in talks to perform at a memorial concert, according to Stephen’s mum, Baroness Doreen Lawrence.
Speaking at the Brit Awards, where Stormzy also used his platform to launch a biting diatribe against Theresa May over Grenfell, Doreen said: “Stormzy spoke to me about getting involved. He’s amazing.”
Speaking to The Mirror, the 65-year-old activist revealed plans with Universal to put on several shows in London for the 25th anniversary of Stephen’s death. The planned concerts will also mark Doreen’s last year of tireless campaigning after setting up The Stephen Lawrence Trust in her son’s name. “Then it’s time to move on”, she said.
After the Brits Stormzy also posted on Twitter calling for his followers to sign a petition calling on the Prime Minister to take action to build public trust in the Grenfell Tower Inquiry. It’s since received 153,000 signatures, 53k more than its original 100,000 goal.
