Sugar Mountain festival 2018 was host to Future Culture, a space of free expression celebrating art, music and ideas. Here's who we met.

Yvonne Le and Juliette Gomes

What do you love to do? Yvonne: I love to get out of the house, go to a bar, hang out with friends, have a few beers and just surround myself with good people and good music. Juliette: I Make coffee and take photos. What brought you to Future Culture at Sugar Mountain? Yvonne: I wanted to express myself and the only way I can really do that is through the clothes I wear. Future Culture allowed me to be myself and dress how I want, without being judged. Who are you most excited to see today? Yvonne: Honey Dijon...and she most definitely blew me away. Juliette: Honey Dijon. What's your greatest hope for the future? Yvonne: That our culture and our younger generations keep creating new things. Juliette: To stay content with life and as happy as I am now. What's your star sign? Yvonne: Taurus. Juliette: Aquarius. What's something you own that you hold most dear? Yvonne: My lip balm and portable charger, haha. Juliette: My film cameras.

Nayndng Biong Mayen and Nancy Atem Yaak

What do you love to do? Nayndng: I'm a freelance model and part time student. I love discovering passionate people and seeing how they express themselves and spreading love and positivity. Nancy: I’m a musician based in Sydney. I’m also a uni student and when I have time and am getting paid what I deserve, a model. What brought you to Future Culture at Sugar Mountain? Nayndng: I came to Future Culture to support my friends' art and Be Collective. Nancy: I’m here as a model with Be Collective - myself and six other gorgeous black women are showcasing some elaborate African hair sculptures styled by Tiyami Tosha in the future culture space this evening. Who are you most excited to see today? Nayndng: Jamilia Woods, Sevdaliza, Actress, Joey Bada$$. What's your greatest hope for the future? Nayndng: That black people will be seen as individuals, as people who represent themselves and who are praised for their achievements. What's your star sign? Nayndng: Capricorn. Nancy: I’m an Aries with a Virgo moon and Capricorn rising. What's something you own that you hold most dear? Nayndng: My Polaroid camera and my vinlys, especially my D'angelo and N.E.R.D records that I got in Japan. They hold a special place in my heart and soul. Nancy: My blackness.

What do you love to do? I'm studying, but I love taking photos of my friends. What brought you to Future Culture? My beautiful friends are showing some work as part of it. Who are you most excited to see today? Amrita Hepi x Pasifika Victoria Choir and Jamila Woods. What's your greatest hope for the future? I hope for so many things that I'm not sure how to answer this. Not to be corny but I suppose liberation, in its many different manifestations. What's your star sign? I'm a Libra, air sign gang! What's something you own that you hold most dear? A painting my little sister made me.

Abrar Abd El-Migid and Sasha

What do you love to do? Abrar: I love to nurture and support the wellbeing and education children - hence my studies to become a teacher! What brought you to Future Culture? Friends tbh, to support their magic. Who are you most excited to see today? Sevdaliza What's your greatest hope for the future? I guess in the grand scheme of things happening around the world this isn't THAT great but I still think it's really important that like today via Future Culture black folks and POC can take up more spaces, be more visible and be more unapologetic at festivals and cultural gatherings like this... What's your star sign? Aquarius What's something you own that you hold most dear? I want to say something profound but probably my stainless steel 2L water bottle. I like to stay hydrated.

Atong Atem

What do you love to do? I love to look after myself and to make art with people. I love to help creative people in the community and to cook. I take photographs, which allows me to create imaginary worlds and a sense of empowerment and community. Who are you most excited to see today? Sevdaliza. What's your star sign? Aries. What's something you hold most dear? I like exploring like aliens and spiritual stories. I love listening to podcasts about near death experiences and aliens and like, you know, multiple universes. Stuff like that.

Delali Zevon

What do you love to do? I like to make music, I like to sing, I like to dance. Just seeing live music I suppose, listening to music and hanging out with my friends. What brought you to Sugar Mountain? I’m really excited to see Amrita Hepi and the Pasefika Victoria Choir. My housemate Alex is in it. And what is your greatest hope for the future? To be independent and fulfilled. What’s the thing that you hold most dear? I think all of my earrings. Your star sign? Scorpio.

Peter Bui

What do you do or love to do? Being quite the patient person, what I do is work for a complaints hotline. What I love to do however is ride my bike, cook, eat, shop for bike stuff, and drink coffee. What brought you to Future Culture? I didn’t know what to expect but when I walked in it was beautiful. I’m really pleased to see an initiative like this to promote not only diversity, but beauty in diversity. The media is clearly not representative of our population, being the 2nd most multicultural country in the world and it's simply not good enough – even a token minority is a rarity. Future Culture is a breath of fresh air. Who are you most excited to see today? Joey Bada$$. What's your star sign? I'm a Leo, but being Vietnamese I was always told by my mother that I was born in the year of the Cat (1987). What's something you own that you hold most dear? My pet bengal cat, Leonidas. We often take him for walks on a lead, which is his favourite thing to do!

What do you love to do? Mojo: Making music. What brought you to Future Culture? Mojo: Music! Live it, breathe it! I’m real keen to see AB Orginals, Joey Bada$$, Future Culture. What's your star sign? Mojo: Aquarius. I'm a Leo, but being Vietnamese I was always told by my mother that I was born in the year of the Cat (1987). What's something you own that you hold most dear? Mojo: My Gibson Guitar.

Jasmine Seale and Ikumi Cooray

What do you love to do? Jasmine: I love to dance. Ikumi: Watching movies, Netflix, drawing and painting. What do you hope for the future? Jasmine: My future? To have more things like Sugar Mountain but like everywhere, so everywhere is so inclusive and great and funky. Ikumi: To travel and see lots of things I haven’t seen before. What's your star sign? Jasmine: Virgo. Ikumi: Virgo. Twins! What's something you own that you hold most dear? Jasmine: Ah, my Canon camera. Ikumi: My iPhone, haha!

Sky Thomas

What do you love to do? I grew up around a big family and they're all very artistic and musical. Everyone plays instruments and paints and draws and that's what I like to do too. What brought you to Sugar Mountain’s Future Culture space? I’m DJing. My DJ name is SojuGang. What is your greatest hope for the future? Security for my giant family. Hoping that they’re all looked after and happy and healthy. Star sign? Capricorn. For my birthday recently I went to an all you can eat buffet. What’s something you own that you hold most dear? This shirt. Who are you most excited to see today? Joey Bada$$.

What do you love to do? I love fashion and art and culture. I’m a full time social media manager but I love fashion styling and creating meaningful work. What’s your greatest hope for the future? That we can be more educated and aware of different cultures. We also need more things like Future Culture. If we had something like this when I was younger it would have changed my life. Your star sign? Scorpio. Yeah don’t mess with me. What’s something the world you love or hold most dear? Definitely my sense of identity.
