If fairies and snow queens existed, they’d look a lot like silver-haired siren Kristen McMenamy. Nicknamed ‘Skeleton’ at high school, unable to bag herself a date to prom, and rejected by every modeling agency she applied to, Kristen’s dreams of becoming a model looked as if they’d never come true. But in 1984, after a brief stint at a fast food joint, she got a call from a boutique agent, a one-way ticket to Paris, and a career defining photo shoot with Peter Lindbergh. Reacting against the blonde bombshell beauties of the 80s, in 1991 Kristen chopped off all her hair, dyed it jet black, and had her eyebrows shaved off a year later. Hailed as the queen of ‘anti-fashion’ fashion, and epitomising the grunge generation, Kristen spent the 90s on every catwalk from Marc Jacobs to Chanel; appeared on the pages of Vogue, The Face, Interview, and i-D; and even smooched a sailor in a Jean Paul Gaultier fragrance commercial. Kristen has three kids, the equally dreamy Lily McMenamy, and two sons whom she had while married to fashion photographer Miles Aldridge. Greys really do have more fun.
