When king of the merkin makers (he was asked to make one for Tom Ford), Johnnie Sapong was a kid, he wanted to be a sculptor. But after being dissuaded from going to art school by his father, Johnnie swapped his trusty clay for some curly tresses, and set about becoming a hairstylist. With roots in Ghana and Ealing, Johnnie has become globally regarded for his super cool styling and cutting edge cuts - his own deafeningly cool dreads being almost as famous as the heads he styles. From coiffure to campaigns, Jed Root’s star stylist has worked with everyone from David Bailey to Dior and Annie Leibovitch to Lacoste, as well as running a comb through cover girl Daisy Lowe’s hair for The Define Yourself Issue, No. 309, Fall 2010. Dub loving, reggae roasting, and hip-hop happy, Johnnie spends his time between London, where he oversees the running of his salon, Johnnie Sapong Studio, and New York.
