Credited as king of the undercut, which he created in 1984 using a pair of electric clippers, Peter Houtenbos, or Christiaan as he’s now known, has been cutting and clipping since he was a kid, kicking it at his father’s barber shop. Stationed as a marine in Curacao during the 1960s, it was here that Christian got his big break; after a case of mistaken identity, sheer luck, and of course, unbridled talent, the young Dutchman found himself shadowing hairstyling sensation, Vidal Sassoon for a day and embarking on a white-glove tour of New York. After a brief stint at Coiffures Americana, Christiaan cut ties with the salon and began working as a freelance hairstylist. From Grace Jones’ flat-top to Rei Kawakubo’s cutting edge looks, Christiaaan has been pushing boundaries for generations.
