Edward Enninful was born in Ghana and moved to London with his family as a young child. Possessing a natural flair for fashion, he was spotted on the tube, aged 16, by Nick Knight who consequently asked him to model for i-D. In 1991, Edward was appointed fashion director of i-D, becoming the youngest ever fashion director of an international magazine. Edward held this position until Spring 2011 when he was made fashion and style director of W, while continuing to consult for i-D. He has worked on numerous fashion campaigns, including Versace, Armani, Christian Dior, Mulberry and Lanvin. Throughout his career, Edward has worked on a staggering number of i-D covers, the first of which was singer Rozalla shot by Hugh Stewart for The Identity Issue (October 1991). One of Edward's most memorable covers was of Kristen McMenamy for The Alternative Issue (March 1996) at a studio in North London. "“We didn’'t have any clothes,"” he recalls, "“so I drew a love heart on Kristen’'s chest that said Versace, because Versace had just cancelled her from the couture shows."” Edward has worked with photographers including Craig McDean, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, Mario Sorrenti, Juergen Teller, Terry Richardson, Alasdair McLellan, Emma Summerton and Richard Burbridge. He also has a close working relationship and friendship with i-D's beauty director Pat McGrath and models Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, all of whom he continues to work with on a regular basis.
