Backstage at New York Fashion week: Helmut Lang AW14Read moreRead more
The header on Helmut Lang’s website reads ‘designer dresses, black blazers, leather leggings’. Evidently the Austrian label is as minimalist with their words as they are with their clothes. Founded in 1986 by Helmut Lang, the designer himself has been heralded as one of the fashion ‘intellectuals’ alongside Rei Kawakubo and Yohji Yamamoto. After his departure in 2005, creative directors Nicole and Michael Colovos took over from Lang and have since been working on their contemporary and painfully cool collections. Sharp lines and androgynous cuts make out the Helmut Lang signature, appearing in varying shades of black and white and advertised in campaigns that don’t even need to show the clothes to make a sale. Favoured by Queen B and boasting artistic collaborations with people like Jenny Holzer, who helped create those super sexy/mysterious posters about biting lips, this house is a cornerstone in fashion minimalism.
