Moving from Thailand to the States, the year he was born, Phillip Lim kick-started his career by studying business and finance at California State University. Waking up and smelling the tall skinny latte, it wasn’t long before Phillip switched majors to something more fashionable. After an internship at Katayone Adeli, Philip was snapped up by Paul Frank Industries. 2000 saw Phillip set up the label Development in somebody’s garage, and four years later he found himself in the back of a taxi with his friend Wen Zhou, coming up with the name of their new label: 3.1 Philip Lim (they were both 31 at the time). With loose tailoring, dreamlike colours, and lots of layering, 3.1 Phillip Lim is the world’s king of casual – something which was attested to in 2011, with a CFDA Swarovski Award nomination for Menswear. For those of you who love the brand but hate the price tag, this September saw Phillip collaborate with American superstore Target.
