Born in Belgium in 1976, Kris Van Assche is a tall and gentle figure. His choice to have a humming bird tattoo on his arm because the tiny bid has the biggest heart is symbolic of the man. Treading a considered path through menswear from the start, Kris followed in the footsteps of his Belgian fashion designer predecessors, studying at Antwerp’s prestigious Royal Academy of Fine Arts, becoming the youngest graduate of the school. Moving to Paris in 1998, Kris soon took up at internship at Yves Saint Laurent under the direction of Hedi Slimane. In 2000, Kris followed Hedi to Dior, where as first assistant, he helped the menswear maverick transform the French label into Dior Homme, reinventing the contemporary menswear silhouette. In September 2004, the Kris Van Assche label was established and its refined take on simple tailored classics was met with instant critical and public success. In 2007, Kris introduced womenswear, playing again with loose silhouettes and beautiful fabrics. In the same year, Kris elected to return Dior Homme as artistic director after Hedi Slimane’s departure. Understatement, attention to detail, and an almost unwavering palette of grey, black, and brown, Kris’s work at both Dior and his eponymous label is about redefining codes of masculine elegance - something he does incredibly well.
