John Galliano is one of Britain’s fashion heroes. Born in 1960 to a working-class Gibraltan family, Galliano lived on the island until leaving at the age of six for South London. He graduated from Central Saint Martins in 1984 and his graduate collection, inspired by the French Revolution and titled ‘Les Incroyables’, was bought by Browns. In 1990, after suffering a period notorious for problems with backers and collections deemed ‘uncommercial’ because they dared to dream beyond the unconventional – Galliano started to show in Paris, moving to the city in 1992. In 1995 it was announced that Galliano would succeed Hubert de Givenchy at the dusty maison de couture. Two seasons later, Galliano became creative director at Christian Dior and he celebrated fifteen years at the helm whilst still continuing to design his own collections. Career highlights include his dramatic curtain call costumes (astronaut, pirate, matador...) and a series of fabulous wedding dresses in his signature theatrical style for celeb pals like Kate Moss and Gwen Stefani. Bill Gayten was named creative director of John Galliano SA in 2011.
