Understated, pared back pieces, and 90’s minimalism in general, are Jil Sander’s signatures, along with edgy silhouettes and warm winter coats that any girl would kill for. The German-born designer, who studied textile design in Krefeld during the ’60s, and spent her early years as a fashion editor in Germany, launched her eponymous womenswear label in 1973. Twenty years later, she showed her first menswear collection in Milan, receiving raves reviews. By 1999, the Prada Group had acquired a majority holding in Jil Sander AG, and the following year, Sander exited her own company. However, in 2003, Jil briefly returned, wowing the press with her subtle yet feminine aesthetic for three seasons, before handing the reigns over to Raf Simons, in 2005. When Raf decamped to Dior, in 2012, Sanders once again returned as head designer. And with her cropped white pants, cropped navy tops, and black and white feathered dress, for spring/summer 14, she proved she’s still got it. However, the announcement of her departure after this show has once again set tongues wagging as to who will be next to succeed. Watch this space.
