Conceived by the late Italian clothing engineer Massimo Osti as a highly considered and complimentary secondary line to C.P Company, a culture of research, experimentation and function have defined Stone Island since its inception in 1982. With its compass badge and name inspired by Heart Of Darkness author Joseph Conrad, it has explored the boundaries of garment making and encouraged a spirit of adventure. Beginning the brand with seven jackets in six colours using one material, three decades later Stone Island is the world’s most high tech fashion house, with huge laboratories dedicated to innovation and experimentation. “Sometimes we take a jacket and put it in a machine, and when we open the machine it’s as small as a tennis ball! But it’s also beautiful because you never know what will happen, this is what’s so interesting,” says Creative Director Carlo Rivetti, who has been the life and imagination of the brand since he bought the company in 1993. Putting his trust in youth, Rivetti appointed Josh Bullen menswear designer in 2011, at the age of 23, on account of his super-sporty Central Saint Martins MA show. With a cult following of Brit-pop music stars and sports-style fans and specifically, Stone Island is leading the way, while forging its own path.
