Alexa Chung’s favourite label for ladylike babydoll dresses and shirts with peter pan collars, Carven is the Parisian brand set up by Madame Carven in 1945. The name derived from the combination of her niece’s name, Carmen and her aunt’s, Madame Boyriven. Carven entered the world of 40s haute couture as a complete novice, bringing with her a freshness and spontaneity of style that resembled the daily lives of women of the time. Retiring in 1993 it wasn’t until Guillaume Henry was announced as creative director and duly revamped re-vamped the girlishly chic couture brand for new audiencesthat the world really took notice. Taking an urban turn, they collaborated with Porter on a range of floral backpacks and checkered purses and did what they do best with a nautical themed line of fashion gems for Petit Bateau. Winter 2013 has proved that on top of it all Carven might just make the best coats of all time as over sized boiled wool beauties in bubblegum shades sauntered down the runway.
