When the great Cristobal Balenciaga closed the doors of his couture house in 1968 he lamented, “There is no one left worth dressing”. For decades, the house lay dormant; until 26-year-old Frenchman Nicolas Ghesquière was appointed Creative Director in 1997. Under Ghesquière’s direction, Balenciaga was transformed into one of the world’s leading modern luxury brands, an influential and forward-thinking position it continues to enjoy to this today. A hot ticket of Paris fashion week, Balenciaga is synonymous with electrifying catwalk shows and groundbreaking, forward-thinking designs that are hungrily snapped up by editors and fashion fans alike. After 15 years at the helm, Ghesquière departed Balenciaga in November 2012 and Alexander Wang was announced Creative Director. Under Wang’s creative lead, Balenciaga continues to demonstrate the rigorous clean lines and purity of form that it’s founder was famous for and that led Dior to announce Balenciaga "the master of us all."
