Miuccia Prada, affectionately and respectfully known as Mrs Prada is one of the most revered designers in fashion, past, present, future. Entering the Prada family business in 1971, (it was started in 1913 by her grandfather Mario Prada) Miuccia now runs the company with her husband Patrizio Bertelli, CEO of the Prada Group. From the coveted and collected bags and shoes to the first womenswear collection launched in 1988, the pretty sister brand Miu Miu launched in 1993, the menswear line launched in 1994, Prada Sport launched in 1997 and Prada Beauty launched in 2000, every immaculate strand of the brand is run by Mrs Prada herself. Miuccia studied political science at university in Milan and was a member of Italy’s Communist Party, yet is said to have worn Yves Saint Laurent on the barricades. The designer, who has made the Wall Street Journal’s ‘30 Most Powerful Women In Europe’ list, also spent a period studying to be a mime artist. These dualities have led to her expert ability in balancing the contrary forces of art and commerce. Prada has its own art foundation and has collaborated with world-class artists including Rem Koolhaas and Francesco Vezzoli. In 2013 Miu Miu opened a three-day members club for women, tying in with Miu Miu Women’s Tales, a series of short films by internationally renowned female directors. A leading light for fashion film, fashion in film and filmstars in fashion shows, without announcement, Miuccia sent superstars Gary Oldman, Willem Dafoe and Adrian Brody down the catwalk at her autumn/winter 12 menswear show. A year later, she worked with her friend Baz Luhrmann on the costumes for film of the year The Great Gatsby, dresses from which featured exclusively in i-D around the time of release. Known for getting things right, empowering women, empowering men, moving the industry forward in terms of film and digital innovation and marrying high culture, artistry and politics with fashion, Mrs Prada is quite simply wonder woman.
