In March 2005, Frida Giannini was charged with pushing Gucci, one of the most recognizable status labels of the late 20th century, into a new era. Born in Rome in 1972, Frida studied at the city’s Fashion Academy. In 1997, she landed a job as ready-to-wear designer at Fendi before first joining Gucci in 2002. Her ‘Flora’ collection of flowery-printed accessories was the commercial hit of 2004. A year later she was named creative director of Gucci women’s ready-to-wear and in 2006 she also took over menswear. The mother-of-one has since put her distinctive stamp on the label, celebrating the house’s inimitable past and expertise in luxury craftsmanship, while adding youth, colour and a playful extravagance. Frida has also been integral in bringing celebrities to the brand; James Franco for fragrance, Madonna and Rihanna for charity-based initiatives. Today, Frida’s living the dream in a 15th century Florentine apartment, listening to one or all of her 7000 vinyl records and wearing something spectacularly glamorous.
