Jean Touitou graduated from the Sorbonne in Paris with a history degree and no intention of becoming a fashion designer. It was entirely by accident that he landed his first job with Kenzo, which was followed by gigs at agnè s b. and Irié. In 1987 he decided to go it alone and launched A.P.C. (Atelier de Production et de Création) as a reaction against the decadence and excess of 1980s Paris. Today, the brand is praised for its minimalist aesthetic, its clean lines and unfussy patterns. Collaboration is important to Jean and over the years he has partnered with Margiela, Martin Sitbon and most recently with Kanye West on an ultra select capsule collection. A.P.C also has a music division; Marc Jacobs and Sofia Coppola have put their names to compilations on the A.P.C. music label and it continues to put out diverse and experimental albums. In his Paris presentations, Jean has his audience in stitches narrating the looks, flying out comments such as “this look is inspired by the sexiness of the German nanny. She doesn’t know she’s sexy, she doesn’t mean it.”If he wasn’t a designer, Jean would have considered being a history teacher. His favourite place in the world is an island in Sicily, from which you can see North Africa.
