Living and working in his Parisian studio since 1973, Paolo Roversi first got into photography on a family trip to Spain. Setting up a darkroom in a vacant cellar, along with the local postman (a keen amateur) Paolo began teaching himself how to take pictures. After working for Associated Press, who sent him to cover Ezra Pound’s funeral, young Paolo went to assist fashion photographer, Laurence Sackman. Fast forward four decades and he’s been there, done that, and shot for practically every publication. With ten covers of i-D under his belt, Paolo is part of the family. A stickler for all things old-school, Paolo favours the muted backdrops and understated, natural lighting of 19th century portraits. Cue his cover for The Anarchy Issue, July 1999, featuring Kirsten Owen, all fresh-faced and doe-eyed. Over the years, Paolo has photographed Georgia Jagger, Isabelle Huppert, Kirsten Owen, Naomi Campbell, Natalia Vodianova, Stella Tennant, Amber Valetta and Clemence Poesy for the cover of i-D.
