Launched as a diffusion line in the year 2000, Marc by Marc Jacobs is the brand that everyone wants to be wearing. From scribble jeans to Lego brooches, limited edition condoms to some funky wellington boots, it’s fun, fresh, and full of cool. Debuting his first collection for spring 01, by the following year Marc had already expanded into menswear as well as opening his first store on Bleeker Street, NYC. Fast-forward to today and there are over 200 Marc by Marc Jacobs stores all over the world, selling everything from eyewear to iPhone paraphernalia. Last year Marc sent shockwaves through the fashion world by appointing dreamy design duo Luella Bartley and Katie Hillier as design director and creative director, respectively. This was the first time anyone other than Marc had creative control over the brand. Inspired by Power Rangers and BMX riders, Luella and Katie’s inaugural collection for aw14 was a glittering success, while their campaign has gone down as one of the hottest in history. Cast exclusively from Instagram (over 70,000 of the coolest kids in the world applied using the #CastMeMarc hashtag), it’s the first of its kind. But then again, king of campaigns, over the years Marc by Marc Jacobs has become known for its cutting edge adverts. Shot mostly by i-D favourite Jeurgen Teller, his ads have featured the likes of MIA, Daisy Lowe, Andre Pejic, and Alice Dellal. With nearly two decades of pushing the boundary, and always being at the forefront of what’s cool, all eyes are on the Marc by Marc Jacobs team and what they’ll do next.
