  • One of the first shoots ever!

"In about 1984 Caryn Franklin ( i-D's fashion editor at the time) asked me if I'd like to do some styling. I was interested and spoke with Terry who was very encouraging and he put me in touch with the amazing Nick Knight (who was also starting out then) and the amazing Mark Lebon."

  • Collaborations with Nick Knight

"I was planning a shoot with Nick Knight for i-D, this was around 1990 , but couldn't find the right kind of model I needed at any of the agencies . One afternoon I was taking the tube from Hammersmith to Ladbroke Grove when I spotted this beautiful young man in the same carriage as me. I plucked up the courage to ask him to model , which he seemed more than happy about. He did the shoot, plus a few more. We became good friends. He then assisted me and carried on to become the fashion editor, then fashion director of i-D and now he is the Fashion Director at W Magazine. Lovely old Edward Enninful!"

  • Shooting 'STRICTLY' with the brilliant Jason Evans

"It was shot all around where I live in Ealing. The models were all young men I had met through Edward Enninful (who modelled in it too). It was one of those shoots where everything just seemed to fall into place and I feel struck a chord when it was printed. I am still very proud of it, it was bought by the Tate Gallery!"

  • Another street casting situation

"I was in Camden Market looking for trinkets when I spotted this handsome, stocky guy workinng one of the stalls. Again, I summoned the courage to ask him to model for me for i-D and it turned out that he lived very near to my house. We hit it off, he did the shoot and our friendship grew from there. He is still one of my closest friends today, the artist and film director Steve McQueen."

  • not just one, many!

"Not really an anecdote, and hard to illustrate, but I realise now that practically my entire network of friends is in some way related to my involvement with i-D over the last 30 years. Wow! I really have a lot to thank Terry for."
