  • 5. Maison Martin Margiela

MMM-mmm. This collection expressed the Margiela woman’s desire to defy conventions of femininity. Circus outfits found re-birth in sleeves and belts, sparkly gilets and metallic bustiers whilst the non-cabaret, surrealist world of Margiela reared itself through austere tailoring. Our favourite looks were the chiffon glitter-scalloped dresses and elongated waistcoats.

The Prada Queen Bee strode down the catwalk in veritable greens, browns and blacks emblazoned with sequins and gems. A brilliant play on female empowerment, Miuccia crowned her illustrated coats and dresses with gem-stone bras. Nothing like wearing your womanhood on the outside as well as the inside.

Raf Simons’ elegant, opulent army of women formed a great glittering snake during the finale walkthrough. The swish of metallic dresses, bustiers and badges felt exciting and exclusive. Snippets of acid colours permeated bar jackets and plisséd skirts, and flirts of glitter shined through poison green, vine-like necklaces. It was a mélange of beautiful colours! Brave and bright yet never brash.

Biology, in the floral and female sense is something we haven't seen on the catwalk for ages - if ever. Tackling the reproductive system through appliquéd, glittery flowers, Christopher Kane upped the shine and shimmer bonding fibres to create an iridescent rainbow of blues, purples, pinks and silvers, worn with encrusted regal collars. It was beautiful, biological and bling.

Marco Zanini’s final collection for the house of Rochas was a dream. Ostrich-feathered shoes dusted the catwalk and Swarovski crystals embellished duchesse satins and organza skirts. You could almost taste the sweetness!
