London now: meet the LCF freshers!

Your first year at uni is when you find yourself, reinvent yourself, shed the old and grab hold of the new. It's a time to realise what you're really into, experiment with style, hair, music and sex, to make mistakes. As part of a fresher fantastic project, LCF freshers join the likes of Kingston, Ravensbourne and Westminster unis. In three years time, where will this lot be? Head designers at luxury fashion houses? Stylists? TV personalities? Tibetan monks following an existential fabric trip to Cambodia? The future's theirs for the taking! Watch them go...

What made you want to study fashion?
My love for art! I love being able to build connections between fantasy and reality, by expressing and exploiting my environment but still portraying meaning in my work. Through art I feel i am able to put this to practice, through my illustrations I am able create portals into diffrrent  dimension, illustrating my thoughts before creating a 3 dimensional 'living' garment. I say living because I believe each garment I create has a life of its own, each one unique from the other.

    What really inspires you?
Life. As cliche as it may sound life is what really inpires me the most, my experiences with my family and friends the good and the bad times. Theres always a moral to learn from every senerio. Sometimes I actually feel like my life is a movie. Haha. Its amazing the power we posess as individulals, to write our own destinies however ludricrous it may be. In a way we are all architects planning, designing and constructing prestigious buildings as we go from place to place.

What do you enjoy most about your course?
What I enjoy most about my course is the freedom! Being able to design and construct anything we want, there are no limitations. Apart from the sky being our limit, its very exciting.

What's the best thing about London and its fashion scene?
When it comes to fashion in london everything and anything is possible.  From my time so far spent living and studying in london i have come to realise that london is a very unique city, extremely different from many others. The vibrant culture of the city unites everyone as one. Fashion trends within cultures are expressed throughout different nationalality, its sure to say that one never feels fashion consious when in london -there are no rules, anything is truely possible.

What was the last thing that really made you laugh?
My sister falling down the stairs, epic.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years time?
I am uncertain what the future holds for me but in 3 years time I see myself being very happy and blessed.

What made you want to study fashion?
I think the most important thing is originality of work so I wanted it make everything myself, even fabrics and not use ready-made fabrics.

    What really inspires you?
The emotion of the first thing that comes into my head when I look at something or feel something. I record it in notes anywhere, anytime. Drawing and writing are first and foremost to me.

What do you enjoy most about your course?
I love attempting many experimental things. Pattern discovery process was really exciting.

What's the best thing about London and its fashion scene?
London is quite multi-cultural. I felt it has an open mind and is very flexible. It can also make each other recognise. These things has a large influence in London fashion and it will make more unique fashion. Their fashion has always excited my imagination.

What was the last thing that really made you laugh?
When I looked at the firework with my lovely friends in last night 2013.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years time?
That time will be final year of my college so I would create more diverse garment designs from what I have learned. Therefore, I will get a job offer from great fashion companies. It means I will be ready to work and collaborate with them.

What made you want to study fashion?
I experienced fashion first time through my father. We always go shopping together to buy his clothes and he said what is the good or bad example of clothing such as details, silhouette, fabric and colour match. Furthermore, he advised to me ‘Do / Don’t’ if I will be a fashion design. From that time, I want to make clothing for my father.  So that is the reason why I want to study fashion.

    What really inspires you?
I always do mind mapping for choosing the concept. It starts from randomly words, especially abstract words such as express feelings. After I choose concept for designing, I research proper images for the concept. I tend to be inspired by colour, texture and details of the images and also mix and match from an image to other different images.

What do you enjoy most about your course?
I love to make something by my hands so I enjoy pattern-cutting class most. But actually most student enjoy the day of no class during course as same as me haha (joke) J

What's the best thing about London and its fashion scene?
Of course the best things about London are vintage fashion and menswear. Their colour scene and mix/match scene are amazing!

What was the last thing that really made you laugh?
I have no idea what is the answer about this question, but I just noticed that few minutes left to hand in this questionnaire haha sigh.. so now I can write the answer.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years time?
To be honest, I do not want to say I will be the best fashion designer in the world. However, I could say that I will be a ery moment.

What made you want to study fashion?
I think it must have been pop music videos, as a kid I was obsessed with all the really silly bright videos, I also loved everything my mum wore, she would always wear black pencil skirts and cool blouses with heels, always looking like she was going to a funeral! so i guess you could say she was the one who first got me interested in fashion.

    What really inspires you?
I'm obsessed with everything pop culture related, I love a strong graphic look and all things man made, im not really into the rustic or messy finished styles. I am probably most inspired by fun materials though, i find myself buying the weirdest yarns and fabrics which ill probably never be able to use. lately my new obsession is knitting with lurex and then soaking it in liquid latex. I love to experiment a lot.

What do you enjoy most about your course?
100% finally having access to all the machines! I love using laser cutters etc, i’ve signed up to every induction, however i do find it a struggle to balance uni and my work, but its definitely been worth it.

What's the best thing about London and its fashion scene?
I love how open minded London is, you can really go off and do your own thing, and if your work hard at it and consider the design people appreciate your work. Also everyone is up for projects, lately I've been working on a set of commissions for Rankin which has been really fun.

What was the last thing that really made you laugh?
This amazing video my friend showed me on youtube, its of Zsa Zsa Gabor for her fitness video “it's simple darling”. she's this amazing woman who married 8 times till she was loaded and just wears fur and pretends to work out in this grand Italian courtyard.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years time?
I’d love to be continuing with my own label, I'd also love to be in Fashion East or something along those lines, fingers crossed! hopefully also doing much more commissions, I love having a particular person in mind when designing.

What made you want to study fashion?
I love the idea of seeing people enjoying something which I have created. I also want a realistic career path that I know I will make money from whist being passionate.

    What really inspires you?
The power of the internet. I definitely believe that if you are passionate enough about your craft to really put yourself out there, it is eventual that you will get the recognition you deserve. I'm already starting up a fashion blog and also trying to sell some prints of my art work as people have encouraged me to do so through seeing my work. It's inspiring to see so many young people of my age getting so far simply from having enough courage to really put themselves out there.

What do you enjoy most about your course?
The fact that my course is the complete opposite of the common fashion school myth that "You will be left alone once you are given a brief and nobody will help you with anything and it's entirely independent" - this is not true at all. At my uni, there is so much help available, that you become overwhelmed with who to choose from to ask for help. That is what made me enjoy my course more; I feel less worried about struggling as I came to university straight from college so I found the transition very difficult initially.

What's the best thing about London and its fashion scene?
East London is equally split between the formal-dresses business people wearing suits and the young, hip and cool adolescents wearing oversized denim jackets with plaid trousers above Jeffrey Campbell Coltrane boots. I love that a lot because East London is considered to be grunge, whilst it still contains the majority of the city's skyscrapers.

What was the last thing that really made you laugh?
A video of Youtube user: icejjfish singing his song 'On the Floor' which will forever make me laugh because he doesn't even realise how badly he is singing.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years time?
Most definitely collaborating with other creatives. I really do hope to have gotten myself as far out as possible.

What made you want to study fashion?
When I was about 4 my mother made me a red velvet skirt. Until then I kind of thought clothes can only be bought. I never stopped thinking of my own clothes since.

    What really inspires you?
    People, everyday life and habits.

What do you enjoy most about your course?
The input of information is enormous and there is a feeling of being always up to date.

What's the best thing about London and its fashion scene?
It's plurality and the fact that it is open to new things.

What was the last thing that really made you laugh?
My flatmate, I hope she will not be offended that I just called her a thing.

Where do you see yourself in 3 years time?
Working for one of the many designers I love here in London.
